US–MED–Infant Botulism-Formula Recall

ByHeart recalls all baby formula sold nationwide as infant botulism outbreak grows

SUMMARY: Baby formula manufacturer ByHeart recalled all of its products sold nationwide Tuesday. The move comes days after some batches were recalled amid an expanding outbreak of infant botulism. According to state and federal health officials, at least 15 babies in 12 states have been sickened in the outbreak since August, with more cases pending. All the infants were hospitalized after consuming ByHeart formula. Parents and caregivers who have the formula in their homes should immediately stop using it and dispose of the product. Babies with symptoms of infant botulism need immediate medical care.

US–Wintry Weather

Arctic air hits much of the US, bringing snow to some areas and very chilly temperatures to Florida

SUMMARY: The eastern two-thirds of the United States is experiencing some of the coldest weather of the autumn season. Arctic air is affecting millions, with record low temperatures expected in the Southeast, including Florida. On Monday, gusty winds and red flag warnings hit the Midwest, while the Great Lakes and Appalachian regions could see significant snowfall. In Florida, wind chills might cause iguanas to fall from trees. Local governments across the South have opened heated shelters. Hazardous road conditions are affecting travel in Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Gardeners in the Midwest and Northeast are advised to protect plants as the growing season ends.

US–Congressional Map-Utah

Judge adopts Utah congressional map creating a Democratic-leaning district for 2026

SUMMARY: A Utah judge has rejected a new congressional map drawn by Republican lawmakers. Judge Dianna Gibson adopted an alternate proposal giving Democrats a strong shot at flipping a seat in the 2026 midterm elections. Gibson ruled Monday that the map approved by the Legislature last month unduly favors Republicans and disfavors Democrats. She ultimately selected a map drawn by voting rights groups that keeps Democratic-heavy Salt Lake County almost entirely within one district. Republicans hold all four of Utah’s U.S. House seats. The newly approved map gives Democrats a much stronger chance to flip a seat. The state last had a Democrat in Congress in early 2021.

US–Warren Buffett’s Message

Warren Buffett warns ‘Father Time’ is catching up but he trusts Berkshire Hathaway successor

SUMMARY: Billionaire Warren Buffett warned shareholders Monday that many companies will fare better than his Berkshire Hathaway in the decades ahead as Father Time catches up with the 95-year-old icon, but he reassured them that he remains confident in his successor. Buffett reflected on life in a new letter to shareholders where he announced $1.3 billion in new charitable gifts to the four family foundations run by his children. Buffett said that “through dumb luck, I drew a ridiculously long straw at birth” by being born in Omaha, Nebraska, where he met many lifelong friends. He said he has been fortunate to have his life saved three times by doctors who lived nearby while managing to avoid the kind of calamities that often cut life short.

US–Philanthropy-Shutdown-Volunteers

Everyday volunteers are providing stopgap services during the shutdown in a show of community power

SUMMARY: Everyday people are improvising stopgap efforts to support their communities through the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. Whether feeding hungry families or maintaining local museum tours, volunteers nationwide are strengthening social ties that they hope will continue making their neighbors whole in the face of persistent precarity. And the community engagement isn’t slowing down even as lawmakers approach a deal to reopen the government. Hale Morrissette, who co-founded a Pensacola Grocery Buddies program to fight food insecurity, finds that “everybody’s stepping up.” She says “they know that this is not something that’s like a partisan type of issue. It’s about service and it’s about taking care of each other.”

Kansas State leading tackler Austin Romaine out for season after opting for hand surgery

SUMMARY: Kansas State will be without linebacker Austin Romaine for the rest of the season. Romaine, the team’s leading tackler, hurt his hand a couple of weeks ago and decided to have surgery. Wildcats coach Chris Klieman announced the decision Monday. Romaine has made 66 stops this season, even while playing with his left hand heavily wrapped. His absence is a big blow to the Wildcats, who have struggled. They are 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the Big 12. They need to win at least two of their last three games to become eligible for a bowl game.

FBN–Vikings Analysis

O’Connell, Vikings have found QB training on the fly with McCarthy to be as tricky as it sounds

SUMMARY: This season for Minnesota was bound to test Kevin O’Connell. The 2024 NFL Coach of the Year has tried to strike a balance between developing a starting quarterback in J.J. McCarthy who’d never played in the NFL and coaching a roster designed for the Vikings to contend. The Vikings’ offense was out of sync during a 27-19 defeat by Baltimore that dropped them to 4-5. O’Connell has tried to put McCarthy in uncomfortable situations, rather than relying on easy plays that could boost the young QB’s statistics. But McCarthy might benefit from more short, high-percentage throws.
