Tim Van Dyke

Head Coach Tim Van Dyke of the Ravens of Maur Hill-Mount Academy of Atchison, Kansas, gives directions to his players at a past game. Van Dyke will not return as MH-MA head coach after 25 seasons.

ATCHISON, Kan. — Maur Hill-Mount Academy and the man who has served as head basketball coach for decades have parted ways.

The Atchison, Kansas, Catholic boarding school, which competes in Class 3A of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, hasn’t released information on the non-renewal of Coach Tim Van Dyke’s contract for the 2019-2020 season. Phil Baniewicz, president and headmaster, confirmed Van Dyke won’t return on Wednesday, but declined to discuss how and why Van Dyke and MH-MA reached this event; Baniewicz cited his respect for personnel privacy considerations.

Van Dyke completed his 25th season as head basketball coach for MH-MA in March, after leading the Ravens to a state tournament berth on a 22-0 record. In his career with MH-MA, Van Dyke oversaw a campaign for one state title in 2006 and several sub-state championships and runner-up achievements.

However, on March 7 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the Ravens — at a No. 1 seed in the 3A tournament — suffered an opening-round elimination and significant upset to the No. 8 Monarchs of Thomas More Prep-Marian of Hays, Kansas. TMP-Marian went on to place fourth overall.

Van Dyke’s departure means MH-MA will be in search of a new head basketball coach as well as a head football coach, following news in April that Coach Jermaine Monroe Sr. had stepped down after 10 seasons to become defensive coordinator at Topeka West High School in Topeka, Kansas.
