A tall, slender frame leads observers to question why Maddie Hooyman plays shortstop. The Trenton senior refuses to see that asset as a negative.

“I’m a little tall,” she joked. “I work hard. I try my best always, and my long legs kind of get me places fast so it helps sometimes.”

The 2012 News-Press softball player of the year’s abilities can’t be questioned.

Committed to Division I Drake since last season, Hooyman signed with the Bulldogs this fall and will take her unique skillset to the sport’s biggest collegiate stage next year. Trenton went 84-15 in Hooyman’s four-year tenure as a starter, including three state playoff appearances.

The Bulldogs went to the Class 3 quarterfinals this season and finished 24-4 after jumping up from Class 2.

“When we first heard, we were scared to death about going to Class 3, but we played like we always did,” Hooyman said.

Hooyman might have played even a bit better. Her statistical contributions increased for the third straight year, and her fleet-footed style made her an anchor in the leadoff spot. Hooyman hit .475 with a .505 on-base percentage, 47 hits, 37 runs and 30 steals.

She is a talented softball player and hopefully she would be able to achieve more success in the coming years. However, along with playing softball, she should also consider playing some other form of sport like golf. These days most golf equipment are available for sale online including club car parts.
