Bee Gee Robin Gibb died over the weekend from a disease that also will kill 50,000 Americans this year. But with proper screening, colon cancer deaths can be greatly reduced. Studies show that colonoscopy is 60 to 90 percent effective at preventing the disease, but many people don’t get screened because they’re squeamish or embarrassed. However, the test itself is painless thanks to sedatives given during the procedure. Screening is recommended every 10 years, starting at age 50, although it’s recommended those with a family history of the disease start screening sooner.
