Missouri's two U.S. senators lauded the Tuesday announcement by Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman that an alternative route had been approved for the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Sens. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, and Roy Blunt, a Republican, renewed their call for federal approval of the project.

“It’s good news that Nebraska leaders found a commonsense compromise to meet environmental concerns of their citizens — it’s good news for our energy security and for job-creation," Ms. McCaskill said in a statement.

"This should be the last obstacle in what has been a long and rigorous review process, and I hope the president will move quickly to give the Keystone XL Pipeline final approval.”

Mr. Blunt used his Twitter account to praise the approval and to "hope (the president) will give final approval soon to boost American energy."

The Obama administration and the U.S. State Department had delayed approval of the project in part because of environmental questions raised about the Nebraska portion of the route.

The pipeline would run from Canada to Texas. It needs State Department approval because it crosses an international border.
