Phillip “Phil” Burdick, 59, St. Joseph, passed away Friday, January 3, 2014, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Phillip was born on January 28, 1954, to Norbert H. and Mildred L. (Banks) Burdick. Phil attended Highland Community College where he played football and was then recruited to play football for the University of Arkansas. From there he went on to Washburn University and graduated magna cum laude in 1976. Phil entered the University of Kansas Law School and graduated in August of 1979. Phil went on to practice Law at Gernon Law in Hiawatha, Kan., and then served two terms as District Attorney for the State of Kansas. He became a member of the Missouri Bar in 1994 and began his practice in St. Joseph, as Burdick Law Offices, P.C., where he continued to practice up until a few days before his death.

In December of 2009, Phil married the love of his life and best friend, Katherine “Katie” Elizabeth Stokes. She then began working with Phil as Office Administrator. Phil and

Katie enjoyed working together, traveling and following the KU Jayhawks Basketball team.

Phil loved life and lived it to the fullest. His hobbies were riding his beloved Suzuki Hayabusa and owned many various motorcycles throughout his life. Phil also loved practicing law and always said he would never retire because of his love for it.

Katie will fulfill Phil’s wishes by continuing his law office with associates Doug Haynes and paralegal Jillee Keith.

Additional surviving family includes daughters, Jessica Burdick and Jenneath (Adam) Burdick-Flora, both of Kansas City, Mo.; son, James Burdick, Platte City, Mo.; daughter, Raven Searcy and son, Barkley Herner, both of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Taelynn and Reece; step-son, Taylor; brothers, Bill, Larry, Alan and John Burdick; sister, Patty Detrixhe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Burdick’s wishes were to be cremated and that his law practice remains open through this difficult time.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, at Hosanna Fellowship Church, 17290 US Highway 71, St. Joseph.
