Chiefs win one at Arrowhead

KANSAS CITY — Matt Cassel and Brodie Croyle each led touchdown drives and the Kansas City Chiefs beat Green Bay 17-13 Thursday night for their first preseason victory since 2008. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and a host of other Green Bay starters didn’t suit up for the final tuneup of the preseason. Backup signal-caller Matt Flynn played into the third quarter and hit 23 of 37 passes for 304 yards, much of it against backups.

Ever since Kansas City drafted him in the first round in 2005, there has been the Texas version of Derrick Johnson and the Missouri version of Derrick Johnson. Texas Derrick was about as good as they get. He set a Longhorns career record with 65 tackles for loss and was clearly the top defensive player in the Big 12. As a senior, he won the Butkus Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s best college linebacker.

Chiefs cut Long to get to 75

The Kansas City Chiefs released wide receiver Lance Long in a move announced Tuesday morning. Long (5-11, 186) played in seven games (one start) with Kansas City in 2009, catching 20 passes for 178 yards.

NFL's labor situation could affect training camp

The posturing continues on both sides, and with the National Football League Players Association and NFL owners miles apart on an agreement, Missouri Western State University could be left with an empty feeling and empty state-of-the art facilities next summer. The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement expires in March. If a deal can’t be struck by then, a work stoppage could result, and the first victim of the impasse would likely be training camps.

Chiefs release 4 players

KANSAS CITY — The Kansas City Chiefs released four players Sunday, including quarterback Bill Stull of the University of Pittsburgh. Stull was signed during training camp when regular backup Brodie Croyle went out with an undisclosed injury.

  • The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing their training camp to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph for the first time this summer, with practices scheduled from July 30 to Aug. 19.

    The camp will include 24 practices in 22 days, including evening practices on Aug. 4 and 18. A Family Fun Day will be held on Aug. 7, with a full-team autograph session and an intrasquad scrimmage. The camp will wrap up with a send-off event on Aug. 18.
