St. Joseph firefighters quickly extinguished a fire late Monday afternoon that began in the kitchen of 2125 North Third St.

Flames and smoke damaged the interior of a North End home late Monday afternoon.

St. Joseph firefighters were called to 2125 North Third Street, in the vicinity of Lafayette High School, about 4:30 p.m.

Occupants made it out safely, and crews succeeded in bringing the fire under control within roughly a half hour while working against a pelting rain. Battalion Chief Paris Jenkins said the blaze began in the kitchen, which suffered the primary damage. He said there was smoke damage throughout the remainder of the structure.

Several pets, including a dog, were safely retrieved from the house.

Fire Inspector Steve Henrichson was summoned to the scene to investigate a cause.
