Twenty years ago, Jerry and Candy Cox lived in a nice home in a good Miami neighborhood. They owned two new cars, including a sweet 1966 Mustang, and a time share in Key West.

He made $76,000 in his job as a troubleshooter for Florida Power and Light. She could afford to stay home and raise their daughter Rachel.

This is happening everyday of the week and has been for the last few years to many good people and families. And like one said if you are middle age in this economy even if you go back to school and spend several thousands learning another trade age discrimination is running wild in the job markets right now and middle age professionals and workers are seeing this daily. So why spend all of the money to go back to school to learn something different and still be holding the bag and no job and further in debt? One thing is for sure if we keep the current people in Washington DC come November we will be in for 4 more years of misery. As Clint Eastwood say's if you are not performing your job you must be replaced. The american dream is just about a thing of the past.

We have only ourselves to blame. When we started wanting cheaper and cheaper merchandise the only alternative that industry had was to move overseas. At first tariffs made things somewhat more competitive but even those became unrealistic as the economy became less regional and more global in nature.
The scary part is that now we have people in power that have turned a blind eye to China and other hostile countries building up their militaries while ours is gutted to fund giveaway programs. The bottom line is simply this, if you can't afford to feed your family without foodstamps or government aid, QUIT HAVING KIDS.
We have access to more information than at any point in human history but yet don't seem to even grasp the fundamentals of procreation. In nature, when animals suffer from a lack of resources the birth rates go down. Unfortunately, in some ways our own species has transcended nature and it will be our downfall.

This is happening everywhere- but St. Joseph is a small minded town that will never ever improve. There are no jobs after college, no opportunities, NOTHING. You have to expect to MOVE and MOVE FAR FAR AWAY. To get away from the stench, the biased Man's world mentality and the pathetic nature of it's people that would just as soon sell you down the river than lend a hand. Sure- it has a Starbucks now, but who cares if you can't afford to buy anything. St. Joseph Missouri is stunted in growth, the occupants are socially stunted, small minded and moronic idiots. That's why I moved far far away, where the cost of living may be higher, but people are educated, communities are diverse, and people GROW in all directions.

Well I'd have to say that if you're not part of the solution then moving is the best thing you could do for this area. Apparently you're too busy looking down your nose to be of any help to anyone.

You must be one of those small minded St. Joseph blights. I left on a midnight plane and left my nose plugs behind. St. Joseph is nothing but white trash and illegal immigrants. So yeah- guess I did that slosh hole a favor. One less set of lungs breathing in the scent of pigs and white scum.

Soooo, what's a person to do if they can afford their family when they bring them into the world and then things change due to no fault of your own? Things can sure get complicated.

The comment above is worth listening to, because socialfingered knows a lot about looking down noses - or so his/her posting history would indicate.

Your posts don't exactly show a lot of warmth either.

Sorry but not all people living here fit your profiling of people here. Furthermore this is not just a local St Joseph Missouri issue or problem it is a national issue we have come to face more and more over the last 4 years with the economy taking a tank and the job market following suit. Read the article one of these couple came here from Florida and had great paying jobs and things for them took a turn. This is happening all over the country and to many people from all walks of life. People like yourself seem to get under my skin with their negative comments and their comments toward fellow man. I bet if one of these people were in a fox hole with you that you have degraded that you would have a different outlook toward them knowing that they potentially could save your hind end. There are also many vets of wars that are homeless and living on the streets and have nothing do you look down on these people as well knowing that they fought to give you the right to look down upon them?

“If someone had just gotten here and can get this job and you can’t, what does that say about you?” he asked...this type of tone smacks of self serving
righteousness in some ways. for some businesses it's cheaper to hire an illegal immigrant or some fresh off the boat who they won't have to pay squat to. And in today's society it's " cooler" to hire foreign.." Look we're doing our part to help the latinos, etc... We'll just screw the experienced workers we have here on hand...." Obviously Mr Ford has never experienced having your job of many many years yanked not because you were doing a bad job but because" Well, the company's going in a different direction and you probably won't be adios " How'd you like to be a 58 year old male, college educated, management exxperience, very knowledgable in what you do and now when you're job hunting being told you're over quallified, or they're looking for someone that's more "collegial" codes for we don't want old, we want young. Heck, a lot of us would take anything to keep the food on our tables and a roof over our heads. Don't employers in St Joseph and other places realize that many of these people have so much more to offer? Obviously not

init4..............You obviously are not an "employer".

The easiest way, by far, to make money or to run a successful business is to hire good people.

One sure fire way to not do so well is to hire bad employees and that is easily defined as employees who are not as productive.

Now, one hint of a lack of understanding might be your focus on "qualifications". Qualifictions are good for one thing....and one thing only.........they get you in the door. After your in the door your qualifications are worth ZERO. It's what you do that is worth something.

I've seen a lot of folks who cite their college degree, their good grades, all of their qualifications and insist they are worth more money. HOGWASH. The only thing that makes them worth more money is their actual production , so maybe you should re-evaluate what you actually accomplish.

I've had many occasions when I hired someone when I couldn't even justify another employee........but I had every reason to believe that person was an "achiever"....a good worker and as I said I believe I can always make more money with good workers and it has always worked out. I often had to "invest" in someone until they got into the job and got things moving.......but good people always did and my choice was always rewarded.

I occasionally hired someone because of their "qualifications" only to find out they didn't produce and I was a fool if I didn't part company as soon as I realized they were not producing.
