Local couple wins Smart car

Many people look under their soda caps in the summer to find “Sorry. Try Again.” A St. Joseph couple found something different — a Smart car.
7UP held a nationwide campaign rewarding 25 Smart cars to winners across the United States. While it’s rare for someone in the Midwest to win, Joe and Diane Massing, of St. Joseph, did.
On Saturday, the Massings were busy driving their new, red Smart Fortwo around the city after being notified they had won the prize while entering cap numbers online.
“We had entered a few that said ‘Not a Winner,’ then we entered one and it said ‘Congratulations, you’ve won a Smart car,’” Mrs. Massing said.
The couple said the cap came off of a 7UP bottle they had bought at Hy-Vee for their daughter Sarah’s graduation party.
There were no expectations to win anything, the Massings said, and rightfully so.
“I’ve been in this business since 1989 and we’ve never had a local winner,” Guy Rocha, a branch manager for 7UP and Snapple, said.
The two-person compact car will be useful for the couple for trips that don’t require many people, Mrs. Massing said, but they won’t be selling their truck or Mercury car just in case.
“The biggest problem I think we’ll have is trying to find where we parked it,” she said with a laugh.
