Friends of the Animal Shelter to host Spay Day

The Friends of the Animal Shelter is hosting Spay Day USA on Feb. 23, and encouraging donors to help defray the costs of spay/neuter surgeries for low-income families that apply.

The shelter is offering a day for low-income families interested in having their dog or cat altered to fill out a Spay Day USA application. The applications are available from local veterinarians or the St. Joseph Animal Shelter.

The shelter impounded 2,579 dogs, with 405 adopted and 389 redeemed, in 2009. There were 1,150 cats impounded, with 124 adopted and 17 redeemed.

Numbers at the shelter have dropped over the last few years, said Lucinda Kerns, president of the Friends group.

“People have noticed more empty cages last year than ever before,” Ms. Kerns said. “It is a day that encourages every humane American to take responsibility for having their cat or dog spayed or neutered to help decrease the population of unwanted pets.

“If everyone would do it, we wouldn’t have to put so many down,” Ms. Kerns added. “Together we can ensure that every companion animal enjoys a long and healthy life in a loving home.”

Please consider spaying or neutering your companion animal, or donate to the Friends of the Shelter for others to do so. It's the BEST way to ensure fewer animals have to be euthanized each year.

Why is spay and neuter so important:

Purdue University Press has released a new book, Inside Animal Hoarding, which profiles one of the largest and most intriguing cases of animal hoarding in recent history. Dr. Arluke's discussion follows the Erickson story with current research on animal hoarding and how it ties into the Erickson case. This integration of investigative journalism and scholarship offers a fresh approach with appeal to a broad audience of readers, those new to learning about the phenomenon, and those with first-hand experience in the animal welfare field.
