BERN, Kan. - The Nemaha County Sheriff's Department is investigating a single-fatality traffic accident that occurred early Thanksgiving morning.
According to a news release, the sheriff's dispatch received a call about 5:15 a.m. Thursday that reported hay bales on fire on 200th Road, two-tenths of a mile west of P Road. A vehicle was also discovered on fire in the hay bales upon the arrival of the Bern Fire Department.
An initial investigation indicated that a 2005 Ford pickup was traveling east on 200th Road when the driver lost control of the truck, causing it to leave the roadway and roll into the hay bales. The accident started the fire, the sheriff's department said.
The driver, who was the truck's only occupant, was found in the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation continues, and the driver's identity is being withheld pending a medical examination.
