Elementary principal earns state honor

Martz selected as this year's Missouri Distinguished Principal

A St. Joseph School District principal has been selected for a top state honor.

Dr. Matthew Martz, principal at Skaith Elementary School, has been selected as this year's Missouri Distinguished Principal by the St. Joseph Association of Elementary School Principals (SJAESP) and District of the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP).

Dr. Martz is one of 13 principals from MAESP districts around the state who will be honored March 13 at a reception and banquet at Tan-Tar-A Resort at Osage Beach. The event will be held in conjunction with the annual MAESP Spring Conference.

"I'm very honored to have been selected and recognized among my peers," Dr. Martz said. "I attributed a lot of my success to my faculty and staff and families, parents and kids that I work with. We work together and it's a team effort."

Dr. Martz has been principal in the St. Joseph School District for nine years. Prior to that, he was a principal in the North Callaway R-1 School District in Kingdom City, Mo., a teacher in Columbia, Mo., and Enid, Okla. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Phillips University and his doctorate from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Principals from around the state and staff and community members of the honoree may call MAESP at (573) 638-2460 for information regarding banquet tickets.

I do not know Dr. Martz personally nor do I have children who attend his school but I observed him in action at his school's Christmas program last week. I have to say, I've never seen a principal so involved at the level as this gentleman was. It is obvious he has invested himself in his faculty and staff. "Congratulations" Dr Martz on this well-deserved honor.
