Blizzard warning in effect; St. Joseph School District cancels for Wednesday

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for St. Joseph, effective at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The St. Joseph School District announced that classes have been called off for Wednesday, because of weather.

Also, the city announced that Holiday Park and Hyde Park will be closed Tuesday night due to weather.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol told St. Joe Now its troopers responded to more than 100 accidents and slide-offs in Northwest Missouri. That was before 5 p.m.

An accident near Hamburg, Iowa, closed northbound lanes of Interstate 29 in Iowa, but the Missouri Department of Transportation said both I-29 and Interstate 35 were open, although snow-packed, in northern Missouri and southern Iowa. That was as of 5 pm. Tuesday.

The main campus of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville closed at 3 p.m. Tuesday due to weather. The Kansas City Center in Liberty and St. Joseph Centers have not cancelled classes at this time.

Forecasters expect total accumulations of 6 to 12 inches for an area from St. Joseph to Kirksville, Mo.

St. Joe Now says winds are expected to reach 30 mph Tuesday evening, reducing visibility on roads and highways. The blizzard warning runs to noon on Wednesday.
