Owner of gun found outside Savannah bank comes forward
Thursday, December 3, 2009 at midnight
SAVANNAH, Mo. - The owner of a 45-caliber handgun came forward Wednesday to claim his missing weapon.
"The weapon checked out and the 60-year-old man from Rosendale had a conceal-and-carry permit," said David Vincent, Savannah's police chief. Apparently the man didn't hear the weapon hit the sidewalk, Mr. Vincent said.
A Bank Midwest customer found the loaded weapon lying on a sidewalk Tuesday near the bank, and turned it over to a teller. While the customer and teller both thought the weapon was fake, police knew it wasn't and took precautions in case someone had been planning a bank robbery.
The owner had no robbery plans, Mr. Vincent said Tuesday. And all's well that ends peacefully, he added.

He has his CCW permit, so he should have known that you cannot carry concealed in a bank. As a reminder, it is even posted on the door that concealed weapons are prohibited.
I'm a supporter of CCW, but you need to be responsible when you carry.

Meow, it is not against the law to carry concealed into a bank. It is against the law (tresspass) to fail to leave a business when asked if that business has properly posted a prohibition to concealed carry.

What if a kid had found it? If you can't be responsible to carry, you shouldn't be allowed. His permit should be revoked!!!!!

Who said the guy had any business at the bank? It only said it fell out of his pocket in front of the bank. Also, WIJG is correct. It's not against the law and you cannot be arrested for the act, but you can be ticketed for it. My question is, if you properly carry your concealed weapon, how will anyone know you have a concealed weapon to ask you to leave with it? I can tell you, whenever I carry mine you would never know I have it with me!

Seriously if the customer and teller thought it was fake what's to keep a kid from thinking the same thing and shooting himself or someone else. What if the customer hadn't been the one to find it it could have easily fallen into the wrong hands. I'm all for gun rights but people need to be more responsible or something bad, really bad could happen plus what if someone would have found the gun and used it to rob or murder somebody that guy who dropped it would be the person the gun is registered too

I forgot to add "with the proper permit" to my 12:32pm post.
I love the "thumbs down" for knowing and telling meow what the law is. Same as the "thumbs down" I have gotten in the past for quoting the Constitution. Man, I LOVE this site! ;)

What if a kid wonders into your yard and drowns in your dogs water bowl. Or what if you leave your keys in your car and your kid drives off with it. Or what if we legalize weed and all of the long haired hippies start trespassing on your property so they can grow it to supply the sudden demand and they carry guns and set traps and use poison to protect their harmless crop of innocent plants. What if..... What if we ban sidewalks so guns won't be found there ever again?
And we all know that once you take away some ones licenses they quit braking the law.

is quite correct on the law. Perhaps part of the CCW training should be checking to see if you hear your weapon bounce off the pavement.
If he had a 45 in his shirt pocket I'd hate to see how big his shirt is.

it is unfortunate that he dropped his gun. I do know though that I believe in the right to bear arms. The right to hunt and feed your family and the right to protect the same. My grand father was with George Wallace when he was shot. He told my parents that one day we would have to defend our property 24 hours a day. He wanted dad to save up the canned rations and weapons. Dad used to think that grandpa was crazy. Until things started to happen that grandpa had warned about. He heard things in government that would make your hair curl. Pretty scarey stuff. I think I will keep my guns.

Meow, where I live out east of town, the banks do not have the no gun emblem so you can carry a gun concealed in a bank legally. Love the remarks above, still laughing. Next class I instruct, I'll have to drop one so the people will know the sound!

A guy doesn't hear the gun hit the pavement nor does he notice the 3-pound weight loss from his coat or pants or where ever he was carrying it. I'd like to think that this would call for a review of his permit to carry.
A customer picks up the pistol and takes it into the bank instead of calling a cop. Not a real sharp thing to do whether they thought it was fake or not. Finding a weapon should trigger (no pun intended) a common sense response to call law enforcement.
Serious mistakes were made in this situation. It was just fortunate that there were no damaging results.

To clear up any misconceptions or falsities that have been have been presented above, here is a link to the Missouri Statues that outline where it is illegal to carry a concelead weapon: http://www.moga.mo.gov/statutes/C500-...
Basically, provided you have qualified and received your conceal carry permit, you can carry anywhere in Missouri except in: police stations, polling places, jails, courthouses, government bldgs, airports, public schools, child-care facilities, casinos, amusement parks, churches, sports arenas, and hospitals.
Banks are nowhere on this list.

i too beleive you have a right to carry a gun if licensed. i dont think i would carry one in a bank, the urge would be too great to rob it. w.j.galt, you must be a geezer if you think 60 isn't old. and you must be if you are scared of dying, and all i can say is a 45cal. is a hand cannon if it is pointed at you as well. i too think he needs his license taken away after this, it is a responsibility to own and carry so as not to harm others with your ignorance. of corse he could have shot himself in the foot if he had a round chambered. but then, they tell you not to do that in trainning as well. dumbcoff!

I see humor is lost on the intellectually weak among us. I liked the old days better, when you had to be relatively intelligent to own and operate a computer. The idea of internet for the masses may not be such a good thing.

Well I think anything above a 9mm is definitely cannonish if you be looking at the bore. And I past geezerism a long time ago. If you are losing your large fairly heavy gun perhaps you shouldn't carry anything but maalox.

This is why I carry mine in the front of my pants:.
If you ask my wife though, she would probably say I carry it there because there's lots of room.
