Hiawatha boys fly to title at Atchison Invitational

ATCHISON, Kan. - In recent years, Hiawatha has gained its primary reputation as a factory for distance runners - a notion Cameron Leupold has been changing with every compact step he takes.

The powerful Red Hawks' sophomore showcased his burgeoning speed Friday with four impressive performances at the Atchison Invitational. He set a pair of personal bests in the sprint events, including a blazing-fast 10.89-second showing in a 100-meter dash showdown with Andre Harris of Atchison.

The stocky Leupold finished two-hundredths of a second behind Harris but shattered the 11-second barrier for the first time in his young career and helped the Red Hawks to an impressive victory atop the team standings.

"That was one race I've been looking forward to all year," Leupold said. "I didn't know if I was going to do it, and it kind of surprised when I saw that time."

Leupold, who ran at state in the 200-meter dash last year, burned his way to an early lead against Harris - a returning finalist in the Class 4A 100-meter dash. But Harris used his long strides to pass him up midway through the race and got the lean at the finish line. He used the loss as motivation in his other event.

Using a blazing fast start, Leupold notched an impressive victory in the 200-meter dash and broke the 23-second barrier for the first time in his career. He shaved a half second off his times in each sprint event and added victories in the long jump and 4x100-meter relay for good measure.

"When they see those results that fast, I think it kind of spurs them on to think that they can continue to do this," Hiawatha coach Ben Kettler said.

Hiawatha saw more of the same drastic improvements in the 4x400-meter relay. Harris got the Redmen out to a sizeable lead by reeling off a sub-50 second split in the opening leg, but Red Hawk junior Gabe Noll gained the lead on the third leg in front of a raucous crowd at Amelia Earhart Stadium. Jordan Marable capped the impressive come-from-behind effort that led to a time of 3:37.

Not to be forgotten, Hiawatha's distance program turned in a consistent effort and scored a large chunk of the team's 170 points. Chris Atlakson and Cale Heiniger both record top-three finishes in the mile and two-mile races, while the 4x800-meter relay ran away with a victory.

Lafayette freshman Marisa Grayson also thrilled the crowd with impressive victories in the sprint events. She swept her way to wins in the 100- and 200-meter dash events and continues to gain confidence during her first season on the varsity squad.

"I thought I would do good, but not as good as I did," Grayson said. "My times just keep going down."

In the 200, she held off teammate Lindsay Laderoute - who turned in three first-place finishes in the hurdle events and the long jump. Those strong individuals performances lifted the Fighting Irish to a fourth-place team finish with 60 points despite having only six competing individuals.

ACCHS' Gentry Linscott kept her impressive season going with two dominant distance showings. The Tigers' all-state senior twice has broken her own school record in the two-mile run but came up 10 seconds shy of doing so by turning in a 12:01.92.

The entire race, she fought the temptation to track her progress on the scoreboard, which displayed her time at the end of the backstretch.

"I try to make myself not do it, but I can't help it sometimes," Linscott said. "It helps when there's somebody to go against. You don't think about it as much when you know you can stick with that person."

Atchison's boys finished fifth in the standings despite the absence of two of the team's top performers. Senior Kyle Downing competed in the 300-meter hurdles at the Kansas Relays, where he placed 25th. Teammate Tyler Newkirk also made the trip to Lawrence, Kan., but did not compete. ACCHS' Derek Wallisch also ran at Kansas and placed 34th in the 800-meter run.
