K-JO 105.5 will hold the Canned Film Festival this summer to benefit the Second Harvest of Greater St. Joseph. Each person who wants to see these weekly movies only needs to bring one canned food item for free admission. All of these movies will start at 10 a.m. at the Regal Hollywood 10 in St. Joseph. Here’s the schedule:

June 23 to 25: “Smurfs 2”

June 30 to July 2: “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2”

July 7 to 9: “Despicable Me 2”

July 14 to 16: “Turbo”

July 21 to 23: “The Croods”

July 28 to 30: “The LEGO Movie”

Gallatin Theatre League plans musical show

The Gallatin Theatre League is presenting “A Musical Revue” of songs from various shows.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. June 26, 27 and 28 at the Courter Theater. Tickets are $8 and are on sale at Eileine’s Beauty Shop, 201 N. Maple.

Proceeds from the June 26 show will be donated to the Gallatin Fire Protection District.

Country Showdown preliminaries in Maryville

A preliminary competition for the 33rd annual Texaco Country Showdown is coming to Maryville, Mo. Preliminaries will be June 21 at Mozingo Lake with the finals being July 18 on the main stage at Nodaway County Fair. The local winner will win $500.

Approximately $200,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded nationwide, including the grand prize of $100,000 to the national winner. Country Showdown gives aspiring artists a chance to launch their professional careers.

Local winners advance to more than 40 state contests where the prizes include $1,000 in cash and the opportunity to compete at one of five regional contests in the fall. The five regional winners receive an expense-paid trip to the national final.

Open to vocal and/or instrumental performers, the Texaco Country Showdown welcomes individual acts or groups with up to seven members to compete. Acts must not have performed on a record charted in the top 100 country format of Billboard within 18 months preceding local competition.

A $20 entry fee is required of all acts. Entry forms are available at the Maryville Hy-Vee, Lanham Music in St. Joseph or by calling PICK-UP COUNTRY, KNIM at (660) 582-2151 or (800) 748-1496.
