Bayer, a welcome addition

Our opinion

Word of a corporate buyout of a local company usually makes us uneasy.

But the recent acquisition of KMG Chemicals by Bayer Animal Health is a promising development for the region.

Bayer’s purchase includes the KMG manufacturing facility in Elwood, Kan. The plant employs 16 workers producing cattle ear tags and insecticides that protect animals. Bayer indicates it will retain the workers.

Although the purchase is not expected to add new jobs, it introduces a global leader in animal health to St. Joseph’s already impressive lineup of businesses. Bayer Animal Health, headquartered in Shawnee Mission, Kan., is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of veterinary drugs.

With corporate headquarters in Germany, the company bears similarities to another business with a strong local presence, Boehringer-Ingeheim Vetmedica Inc. St. Joseph’s positive experiences with this animal health company make us even more receptive to Bayer’s entrance onto the local manufacturing scene. Boehringer owned the Elwood business before selling to KMG a few years ago.

Bayer’s expansion into St. Joseph also solidifies our connection to the Kansas City Animal Health Corridor. The city has always been a key part of the world-recognized area for animal health research and manufacturing. Strengthening these ties raises St. Joseph’s profile. It also increases the possibility Bayer will look to the region when considering expansion or new investment.

The company also indicated it will explore ways to further develop and bring innovations to the insecticides market.

To Bayer, we say welcome to the region. We look forward to growing together.
