Sylvia Says: Sweet Sally’s Bakeshop may be better than homemade

When I’m stuck on what gift to give someone who either has everything or I don’t know well enough to be sure of what they want, I usually bake them something. It seems that everyone likes homemade treats. And if it’s more than they can eat, sharing with friends is usually an option.

But if you don’t bake or have time to bake, you can still send something with a homemade taste, thanks to the Internet. One of the online bakeshops to check out is Sweet Sally’s. Sally is Sally Saltzbart Minier, a third-generation baker. She has a line of made-from-scratch baked goods, “like mom and grandma used to bake,” including double chocolate scones, Kahlua coconut chocolate-dipped macaroons, fudgy brownies and New York specialties such as chocolate rugelach (a traditional pastry filled with chocolate, currants and jam, all rolled by hand) and Big Al’s Black and Whites (a New York City favorite cake-like cookie topped with rich chocolate and vanilla icing). I tried the raspberry squares and blueberry cranberry buckle. They both have that wonderful buttery, crumb-cake-type base. And they are made with all natural ingredients plus a little bit of “magic” (seriously — it’s the last ingredient listed). Neither are that overly sweet stuff you get at the grocery store, and both would be wonderful with coffee or an afternoon tea.

The bottom line: If you can’t bake it yourself, these are the next best thing, and maybe better, depending on your baking skills. Check them out at www.sweetsallys.com.
