Fifty years ago on July 30, 1961, a couple of Nebraska farm kids, Keith Hawxby and Virginia Van Winkle, exchanged wedding vows at the EUB Church in Dawson, Neb. They met while attending Peru State College in Peru, Neb. After completing college (for the first time), they worked as teachers in Tecumseh and Pawnee City, Neb. Their first son, Dennis, was born in Pawnee City. Soon Keith felt the need to continue his education and attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla., where he received a master of natural science. It was here where their second son, Van, was born. After Keith graduated with his master’s degree, the Hawxbys moved to Carthage, Ill., where Keith taught science and math at Robert Morris College in Carthage. Fifty years and still going strong: Kenneth Kirk Griffin and Patricia Kagay Griffin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary late this spring. Ken and patty were married on May 19, 1961, at the First Baptist Church of Stewartsville, Mo. Ken and Patty were both members of the Stewartsville graduating class of 1959, and little did they know where that education would lead them. Patty began her working career in the typing pool at the First National Bank in St. Joseph. In the intervening years, Patty would eventually work her way to many years as vice president of a nationally ranked bank, the Fifth-Third national Bank. Ken also started his career in St. Joseph, loading box cars at the Quaker Oats Company. He too would work his way into upper-management, eventually serving many years as the general superintendent of the world’s largest flour mill at Nabisco Brands Inc. in Toledo, Ohio. At the urging of their loving family, Patty and Ken were finally talked into giving up the rat race and enjoying an early retirement. Happily, they returned home to St. Joseph in 1999.  ... Read more

Jay was in World War II serving in the Navy. Hazel worked at Nellie Don Garment Co. sewing on Navy uniforms. Jay farmed 52 years in Union Star before retiring. Keith and Linda were married June 3, 1961, near Stanberry, Mo., by the Rev. Russell Evans. Keith works part time for the St. Joseph Stockyards, and Linda retired in 2011 from UMB Bank.
